Otway Fields - Preserves, Pickles & Vinegars Dan Hunter loves their jams and so do we. What a recommendation - coming from The Age's Good Food Guide Chef of the Year in an article published on Tuesday 22nd September in The Age's Epicure. Read the full article HERE. Ami and Franz Hillege grow all their produce organically on their small farm, Otway Fields in the Victorian Otways. Once fruit and vegetables are harvested, they then create wonderful preserves using their produce, based on favourite family recipes. These delicious products will be available under their 'Otway Fields' label at Birregurra Festival and at the Birregurra Sunday Markets starting in November.
Forrest Brewery - Award Winning Brews It's been a busy few years for Sharon and Matt at Forrest Brewery and as the Herald Sun's Aaron Langmaid points out "Brother and sister brewers Matt and Sharon Bradshaw have helped turned the fortunes around for Forrest, a hamlet near Victoria’s Otways which slid into obscurity after the demise of the local logging industry." We're very lucky to have this terrific place a short drive from Birregurra where we can get a great meal, enjoy a cold brew on a hot day and listen to some local music. And even with the dining hall and boutique brewery in full swing, Matt & Sharon always seem to find time to get involved with the Birregurra community, especially at the Birregurra Festival. Once again this year, you will find the Forrest Brewery team pulling their small batch artisan beers from their mobile brewery - a fabulous vintage Airstream - in the Festival Food & Wine Precinct. "The Forrest Brewing Company, which now employs nine full time locals and another 15 casuals and this year two brews — the stout and pale ale — were recognised at the Australian International Beer Awards." Birregurra Festival & Art Show, October 10-11
BIRREGURRA, Victoria – July 31 2015
The runaway success of Dan Hunter’s regional three-hatted Brae Restaurant may have finally put Birregurra on the map, but this sweet little country town, with its tiny population of just over 400 residents, has been punching above its weight well before Hunter’s arrival. On Saturday and Sunday October 10 and 11, the town’s festival organisers and their cavalcade of community volunteers will deliver the 16th Birregurra Festival & Art Show—set to draw an anticipated 10,000 visitors across the weekend—with another hotly anticipated live music line-up that rivals many of its regional and even some its metropolitan counterparts.
After last year’s 2014 stellar line up, visitors this year will again be treated to top quality live music performances across two stages from Melbourne indie folk trio Woodlock, funk band The Kite Machine, country folk group Moosejaw Rifle Club, indie-rock band The Peeks, ukulele crazed musos Ukes D’Jour, folk artist Forever Son and indie rock trio The Elliots.

“Visitors will also be treated to a performance by the 100-member community choir, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Marsh as well as a raft of other great talent that we have in the Colac region and from the Surf Coast, Geelong and Melbourne” says Festival Organiser, Vicki Jeffrey.
“The Otway’s offers so much wonderful produce from truffles to shitake mushrooms and black garlic, as well as craft beer, wine and flavoured gins—much of which will be available to enjoy along with a raft of popular and innovative food vans.”
“The festival is a big deal for a community our size. It’s not-for-profit and is the major source of fundraising for local community groups, with all money raised going back into the local community.” Vicki Jeffrey continues, “Just about every community member has a role to play over the weekend and visitors to the festival who come from all over the state have a really great time and can see the enormous effort put in. They also come back, which is awesome!”
Birregurra Festival and Art Show is a celebration of community life, the best of local gourmet food and wine, modern agriculture and regional artists. On a weekend that transforms the vibrant heritage town into a lively market place visitors will find something for every member of their family.
The weekend kicks off on Friday October 9 with the opening of the renowned art show. The award show, held in Birregurra’s Main Street Hall from 7.30pm, features about 300 entries from artists throughout Victoria. With all works for sale, this is a great opportunity to purchase an original piece.
For young families, Australia’s newest and most colourful children’s entertainment band, the MikMaks, will entertain children with their quirky songs featuring the world’s best drumming Panda ‘Drums the Panda’ and look out for ‘Bruce the Hairy Crocodile.’ There will also be the popular children’s animal nursery, carnival rides, a rock wall, laser tag and much more.
For foodies familiar with the recent accolades of superstar chef Dan Hunter, the region’s produce, which has increasingly been featured in the media spotlight this year, will be able to discover local produce and imbibe in the festival’s own Food & Wine Precinct.

Across the whole weekend the streets will be a buzz with arts activities, historic displays and market stalls. Weave your way through the crowds to explore a range of handcrafted goods and fresh produce. A dog jumping competition will run over both days—open to all pampered pooches talented enough to leap for a treat.
A display of vintage cars from the town’s own vintage car club and clubs further afield will be on show. The Garden Hub will boast plants and gardening advice. The Arts Expo in the historic Masonic Lodge showcases the town’s community arts and features artist demonstrations as well as performances by Birregurra’s Ukulele Kollective, Gospel Choir and an enthusiastic group of zitherists. And for those wanting something more traditional, there will of course be the wood chop competition on Sunday sponsored by local timber company, AKD.
